It’s been my dream to run my own business for a long time, since I was a teenager. I’ve played at it here and there, just never really got anything going.

But now I’m in a perfect position to devote some time and energy into a business, I just have to decide what it is I want to do.

The first thought is, of course, photography. And while I have regained a lot of my enjoyment of the craft, the idea of getting back into it as a business literally makes me feel sick inside. Sure I can see myself selling an image here and there or maybe even making greeting cards out my photos. But thinking about portrait sessions, weddings or — shudder — journalism … I just can’t do it.

One of my major goals in life has been to simply be able to stay at home, working as a photographer though would mean that I’d have to be constantly away. So photography is out.

I thought about web design. I picked up a lot of design and layout skills during my years as a journalist, and I’m fairly handy with the computer. I know a lot of coding etc, but the layout programs have gotten so good you really don’t need that knowledge anymore.

Recently I’ve been working at redesigning a friend’s web page for his business (I’ll post a link when we finish). The work isn’t bad, and I can do everything needs be done right from my couch. But I just don’t see myself truly enjoying it, and I’d really like to find something I really love.

I’ve heard a lot of folks say “if you do what you love, the money will come.” And — to be honest — I’ve considered the saying mostly baloney. But now I’m in the perfect position to test the theory. I make plenty of money at my “day jobs,” and I have plenty of free time to pursue my own endeavors as well.

So we’ll have to see how this goes.
