Circle Seven Gun Dogs

We met Sam and Jill Wyrick while living in Independence, KS. Sam loves to hunt and work his dogs.

I put together a site for him a couple years back but I was itching to take another stab at it. He agreed and we got to work.

This is what we ended up with, check it out!

I got to looking at the stats for my blog.

Usually I get 2-3 hits a day, but the day I write about visiting the ER thinking I’d broke my foot suddenly I have 67 folks reading my blog.

I wonder what exactly that means.

Netflix for iPod

Last week saw the release of the highly anticipated Netflix app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I downloaded it as soon as I heard it was available.

Noel and I have been enjoying our Netflix subscription immensely. We have the least expensive unlimited plan. Comes to just under $10 per month, we get one DVD at a time and unlimited access to their Watch Instantly selection. We’ve been making full use of the watch instantly. There is a good selection of movies available and the technology works well.

I was very excited to try Netflix on my iPod. That way I can view shows that Noel doesn’t necessarily want to see and she can use the laptop.

I’ve been using the app pretty heavily over the past two days and I have to say I’m very impressed. I have encountered some issues with the app crashing or refusing to play but overall the selected video loads quickly and plays with little or no noticeable buffering.

And these results come from a connection with download speeds topping out about 500 kbps, and with at least one other person using the same network. The feature of the app that analyzes your connection speed and automatically delivers appropriate video apparently works.

Now if the rumored 3G iPod appears next month and this app works as well on that device, I’ll be very happy.

PS- And I’m thrilled with the battery life. On a full charge, I watched three episodes of Stargate: Atlantis and I still had more than 20 percent charge left. It seems to me watching videos stored on the iPod itself uses power at a far greater rate than this app does.

Homemade iPod stand

iPod stand - 1

I’ve been watching a lot more videos on my iPod Touch recently, thanks to the Netflix app.

And I’ve been longing for some kind of stand on which to place the iPod so I don’t have to hold it the entire time I’m watching.

I’ve found lots of manufactured options available on the net. And some day I will probably purchase one of them. But I had a brain-fart this morning and thought this up.

Works pretty good, but one day I will buy one of the pre-made models that fold flat so I can take it with me on trips.

Business opportunities

It’s been my dream to run my own business for a long time, since I was a teenager. I’ve played at it here and there, just never really got anything going.

But now I’m in a perfect position to devote some time and energy into a business, I just have to decide what it is I want to do.

The first thought is, of course, photography. And while I have regained a lot of my enjoyment of the craft, the idea of getting back into it as a business literally makes me feel sick inside. Sure I can see myself selling an image here and there or maybe even making greeting cards out my photos. But thinking about portrait sessions, weddings or — shudder — journalism … I just can’t do it.

One of my major goals in life has been to simply be able to stay at home, working as a photographer though would mean that I’d have to be constantly away. So photography is out.

I thought about web design. I picked up a lot of design and layout skills during my years as a journalist, and I’m fairly handy with the computer. I know a lot of coding etc, but the layout programs have gotten so good you really don’t need that knowledge anymore.

Recently I’ve been working at redesigning a friend’s web page for his business (I’ll post a link when we finish). The work isn’t bad, and I can do everything needs be done right from my couch. But I just don’t see myself truly enjoying it, and I’d really like to find something I really love.

I’ve heard a lot of folks say “if you do what you love, the money will come.” And — to be honest — I’ve considered the saying mostly baloney. But now I’m in the perfect position to test the theory. I make plenty of money at my “day jobs,” and I have plenty of free time to pursue my own endeavors as well.

So we’ll have to see how this goes.

School busses

Well the first full week of school is ended. I enjoyed this job last year, but I really love it this year. There are a number of differences.

First, I have my own route. I know what time I have to be at the bus barn every morning. I know where each of my stops are and what time I’m to be at them.

The biggest differences though are really related to the rest of my life. Last year was a rush, and I don’t mean that in a good way either. I was driving into town three or more times a day. I was trying to work at WalMart in the evenings. I was very stressed out and constantly exhausted. It was not a fun time.

This year is much more relaxed. My other job is only every other weekend, and every other Monday. I can’t believe I actually get a weekend to myself again! That every other Monday will be kinda rough, but not too bad.

When I get done with my route, I can take my time leisurely shutting the windows and checking the bus. No more zooming through the post-run because I have to be at my other job five minutes ago.

I … LOVE … it!!!

Now, if I can just figure out what I want to do for my own business so that I don’t even have to work that every other weekend job I’ll be golden!
